Clinical Significance
Codeine and morphine are narcotic analgesics. Codeine is also used as an antitussive. Both exhibit half-lives of 2-3 hours. Side effects of therapeutic use of these drugs, and effects of excessive use are similar, differing only in degree. Among these effects, the more serious ones are confusion and anxiety, respiratory depression and the development of physical dependence.
