Clinical Significance

The spectrum of abnormalities in serum immunoglobulin concentrations is broad. Abnormal concentrations range from a virtual absence of one or more of the three major classes of immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA and IgM) to polyclonal increases in one or more immunoglobulins. Measurement of these immunoglobulins aids in the diagnosis of abnormal protein metabolism and the body's lack of ability to resist infectious agents.

Serum contains over one hundred individual proteins, each with a specific set of functions and subject to specific variation in concentration under different pathologic conditions. Serum proteins have been fractionated on the basis of their electrical charge at a particular pH into five classical fractions: albumin, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta, and gamma proteins.   The relative proportions of these fraction have proven to be an aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of certain disease states.
