Limitations
Method used is capable of detecting both viable and non-viable influenzae particles. Performance depends on antigen load and may not correlate with other diagnostic methods performed on the same specimen. A false-negative test result may occur if the level of viral antigen in a sample is below the detection limit of the test.
Reference Range
Negative
Clinical Significance
Influenzae illness classically presents with sudden onset of fever, chills, headache, myalgias, and non-productive cough. Epidemics of influenzae typically occur during winter months with estimated 114,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths per yearin the U.S. Influenzae viruses can also cause pandemics, during which rates of illness and death from influenzae-related complications can increase dramatically.
