Preferred Specimen

Preferred: Lavender top (EDTA)

Acceptable: Green top (lithium or sodium heparin), gray top (fluoride oxalate)

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 4.5 mL

Collection Instructions: 

  1. Collect 4 mL whole blood EDTA (lavender-top), sodium or lithium heparin (green-top), or fluoride oxalate (gray-top) tube.
  2. immediately, vigorously mix with 4 mL pre-chilled, ice cold 7% or 8% Perchloric Acid.
  3. Let mixture stand for 10 minutes.
  4. Centrifuge. Separate and submit 4.5 mL supernatant fluid for assay, refrigerated 2-8°C. Transport refrigerated (cold packs).
  5. Maintain 1:1 ratio for whole blood and Perchloric acid.
