Preferred Specimen

Patient Preparation: 

Specimen Type: Whole blood EDTA AND Plasma Sodium Heparin

Collection Container/Type: Lavender top (EDTA) AND Green top (Sodium heparin)

Submission Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA) tube AND Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 5 mL whole blood & 1 mL plasma

Collection Instructions: 

  1. Centrifuge sodium heparin tube within 1 hour of collection.  Transfer plasma to a plastic vial.
  2. Send lavender samples in original collection tube, do not aliquot.

Additional Information:

  1. If only normal Hemoglobins are detected, the results will be reported within 24 hours.
    However, if any abnormal Hemoglobins are present that require additional testing, turnaround time may take as long as 5 days.
    Specimens for Hemoglobin by HPLC are stable for 7 days at refrigerator temperature. However, if Hemogram is needed for accurate interpretation, the Hemogram portion is only stable for 3 days from the time of collection at refrigerator temperature.

4 mL Whole Blood & 0.2 mL plasma
