Clinical Significance
A1-AT is a protein synthesized in the liver. Deficiency in adults results in pulmonary emphysema and hepatic diseases. Among children, severe deficiency most frequently presents as liver disease, cholestasis, and cirrhosis.  A1-AT is also an acute-phase protein and its concentration increases several fold in the case of acute or chronic active inflammation. Patients may have falsely normal levels during acute illness.
