Preferred Specimen

Patient Preparation: 


Specimen Type: Whole Blood Sodium Citrate


Collection Container/Type: 2x Light-blue (citrate)


Submission Container/Tube: Submit sample in original collection container.


Specimen Volume: Two light-blue (citrate) 2.7 mL tubes, completely filled to obtain a 9:1 ratio.


Collection Instructions: 



  1. Venipuncture should be performed using a 21-gauge or larger needle.

  2. Blood should be drawn directly into an evacuated plastic or siliconized glass tube or syringe containing 3.2% (0.1 05M) buffered sodium citrate (1 part anticoagulant to 9 parts blood).

  3. After sample collection, ensure proper mixing of anticoagulant by gently inverting the tube by hand 3 to 4 times. 

  4. Discard the sample if there is a venous collapse or stoppage of blood for collection.

  5. The collection method (both citrate concentration and venipuncture method) should be kept consistent.  Use of unbuffered sodium citrate anticoagulant is not recommended.

  6. Do not refrigerate samples.

  7. Samples must be walked down directly to the lab.  Do not use the tube station.
