Instructions
  1. Patient should pass stool into a clean, dry container mounted on the toilet for this purpose.
  2. Place enough stool in the transport vial to reach the fill line indicated on the vial.


Specimen Stability

Preserved Stool
Refrigerated: 2 weeks

Unpreserved Stool
Refrigerated: 24 hours
Frozen: Unacceptable




Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Rejection will occur for the following reasons: improperly labeled specimen, insufficient volume, specimen not submitted in appropriate transport container, leaking specimens, stool samples contaminated by products with an oily or particulate base (Barium, mineral oil) are not acceptable.

Qualitative immunochromatographic assay that detects Cryptosporidium and Giardia antigens in stool.

Limitations

Negative results can occur in samples containing low levels of antigen. Consider collecting multiple specimens over a few days for patients highly suspected of being positive.

Clinical Significance
Detection of a pathogen suggests an infectious cause of diarrhea. Diarrhea may be caused by a number of pathogens and other factors.
