NOTE: Gram stains are not performed on samples ordered under genital culture. If tissue or abscess material is submitted please order under Tissue or Wound culture.
NOTE: Culture is not recommended for detection of bacterial vaginosis. (see BVPCR)

Sources: Bartholin cyst, Cul de Sac, cervical swab, endometrium, penile discharge, urethra, vaginal swab, intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD).
Collection Container: E-Swab, sterile container
Specimen Volume: Swab or 0.5 mL fluid




Instructions
  • Bartholin Cyst: Decontaminate skin with surgical disinfectant, Aspirate material from the duct(s), Submit in sterile container or capped syringe (needle removed), Alternatively, submit swab of aspirate pus (in swab transport medium).
  • Cervical Swab: Clear away vaginal mucus and exudates with a large swab, Moisten speculum with warm water (do not use lubricants as they may be bactericidal, Using a small swab inserted through a speculum, sample the endocervical canal. Avoid the vaginal walls during collection, Submit swab in transport media
  • Intrauterine Contraceptive Cevice (IUD): Remove and submit devise in a sterile container. IUD’s are cultured for Actinomycetes only
  • Penile Discharge: Utilize a culture swab with transport media
  • Urethra: Utilize a culture swab with transport media, If there is no exudate, collect 1 hour after urination. Wipe area clean, Insert urethrogenital swab 2-4 cm into the endourethra, gently rotate the swab, leave it in place for 1-2 seconds, and withdraw swab
  • Vaginal Swab: Collect fluid from the vagina with a sterile pipette or culture swab, Submit swab in transport media
  • Other samples: Follow standard collection protocols


Specimen Stability
Specimen must be received in laboratory within 24 hours of collection.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Rejection will occur for the following reasons: improperly labeled specimen, insufficient volume, specimen not submitted in appropriate transport container, dried specimen or swabs received, samples submitted in formalin , expired transport device.

Negative for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Streptococcus Group-B and microbial pathogens
