False negative results can be caused by delay or inappropriate transport. Culture is not the optimal technique for detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, consider molecular testing alternatives for urethral, cervical, and urine samples.

Clinical Significance

Isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae may suggest an infectious cause of symptoms. If an appropriate collection/transportation container is not utilized and sent immediately, recovery of N. gonorrhoeae will be compromised and a false negative may occur.
