Limitations

2+Hemolysis decreases results by up to 18%.  Bilirubin at 15 mg/dL may increase results by 14%. 
Visual lipemia has <10% negative effect.

Interferences from medications or endogenous substances may affect results.

Clinical Significance
Normal individuals have low but measurable serum α-amylase activity which is produced in the pancreas and parotid glands.  Measurement of α-amylase activity is of value in diagnosing pancreatitis and other pancreatic disorders which result in elevated serum α-amylase activity.
