Preferred Specimen

Patient Preparation: An early morning specimen is preferred

 

Specimen Type: Serum

Collection Container/Type: Red top

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions: 

  1. Draw blood in a red-top tube (no gel).
  2. Separate serum after clotting. 
  3. Do not submit glass tubes.

 

Specimen Type: Plasma

Collection Container/Type

Preferred: Lavender top (EDTA)

Acceptable: Green top (sodium heparin), or Green top (lithium heparin), or Royal blue-top (EDTA) plastic trace element blood collection tube

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions: 

  1. Draw blood.
  2. Separate plasma and immediately transfer to a plastic vial. 
  3. Do not submit glass tubes.
